Transgender, that umbrella term from before, that's what I'm talking about now, and Queer.
Many terms fit into these umbrellas but we'll go slow
As always, questions - just ask (or inbox me for anonymous questions).
Transvestite - someone who dresses in the opposite gender's clothing (I.e. a man in a female t-shirt or a female in all male clothes). This is NOT for sexual kicks (that's called Cross-Dressing and the two are beginning to be separated within the Trans* community). This does not mean the person wishes to BE the opposite gender, they just dress in the opposite gender's clothing to feel comfortable in their own skin.
Drag king/queen - a performer, someone who dresses in the opposite gender's clothing for entertainment purposes. (If they're dressed as a female, they're a drag queen, and if they're dressed as a male, they're a drag king). For some good examples, look up Lily Savage, Dame Edna Everidge (might have spelled that one wrong) or Ru Paul.
Transsexual - someone who's brain doesn't match their biological body. They are trapped within the wrong gender's body. This is someone who can and (most likely) will choose to undergo TRANSITIONING (also referred to as a sex change, although this is frowned upon) wherein they go through Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), can choose some plastic surgeries (it's a messy business but I'll do a post on that eventually) and go through legal processes of changing their name and gender.
There are two types of transsexual, FTM and MTF.
FTM - a person born biologically Female who is Male and chooses to transition. (The correct pronoun for this MAN is "he, him, his, Mr). FTM means Female To Male also known (correctly) as Trans-man.
MTF - a person born biologically Male who is Female and chooses to transition. (The correct pronoun for this WOMAN is "she, her, her's, Miss/Ms/Mrs/Madam). MTF means Male To Female also know (correctly) as Trans-woman.
Those are the basic Trangender terms (or Trans* if you prefer).
Next, Queer.... and NOW, it's damned confusing but well worth knowing.
Androgynous, gender-queer, non-binary, gender fluid, third gender, (the list goes on, feel free to list below - someone who doesn't feel at ease with the traditional labeling of gender, they may feel like a different gender from day-to-day, they may not associate with any gender at all, they may feel like they are both male and female simultaneously. The correct way to refer to these people is by their preferred pronoun (ASK, don't be shy!) And the correct title is officially deemed "Mx" however some may use the more "traditional" titles depending on their feelings that day.
Pansexual - someone (any gender variant) who is sexually attracted to people regardless of their gender identity. Lots of Pansexuals refer to it as "falling in love with the person, not the (equipment)"
Intersex - also referred (incorrectly) to as hermaphrodite. Someone who is born with both sets of gentials to one degree or another, often brought up (after gender assignment surgery) as one gender or another. Levels of intersex vary and the side-effects do too.
Last one, for the moment, and though many would argue I think this belongs here, in Queer.
Trans*Allies - people who are not Transgendered or flexi-gendered (there's another one for androgynous) but support the belief that Trans* people have the right to equality within the community and law. Also referred (correctly) as LGBTQ activists. They do not necessarily fall into the LGBTQ community any other way but they believe in equality, regardless of sex, sexuality, gender identity, etc.
Yeah, there you go... I'm gonna stop for a while and give everyone's brains a break... follow me, inbox me, leave me comments on this thread, start a new thread, ask questions, EDUCATE YOURSELF! It's fun
